In the class, students find old clothes, accessories, and other gadgets and gizmos and repurpose them into beautiful creations that you would have never even imagined could be designed. Taking what is donated to them (or found in their own homes from the deepest darkest parts of their closets where we know all old clothes get lost) the students repurpose and create things from bags to shirts and from dresses to shoes. Over the years, the class has done both individual projects and even group projects. For example, in 2012 students were given an assignment where they had to create a costume with a particular theme. What they created was a dress inspired by Alice In Wonderland’s Alice, sewing nothing but blue and white wrappers from juice packets, granola bars, and even chip bags! In 2013 they created a Recycled Wrapping Paper Rock n Roll Rihanna costume.  (The wrapping paper was donated from an Old Navy Commercial and the Tencel Top was donated by Lenzing, made from Eucalyptus trees.)

Learning every step of the way, these future eco-leaders are finding new ways to stay fashionable while also being sustainable. They’ve taken trips to eco-fashion conferences like Women Of The Green Generation, and trade shows like Designers and Agents. Currently they are in the works of planning a trip to Ojai and San Francisco to various places like Patagonia and Green Planet Productions, and will also meet the founders of Heart of Green Designs, Eco Citizen Boutique, and EcoFabulous.com who will show them how to further their interests in sustainable fashion and film. There is nothing but excitement and creativity coming from these wonderful eco-geniuses in the ECHS R’ashion class! As an R’ashion alumni, I cannot wait to see what the future holds for them!
